This round was designed to bridge the gap between the .338 Lapua and the .50BMG in performance. This round stays supersonic at well over 2000 meters and has the same kinetic energy at a at a mile as a .44 Magnum. (as stated by a Chey-Tac spokesperson)

This round has the ballistic properties for anti-personnel, anti-sniper and anti-materiel roles.
In the civilian market this round cost more than the .50BMG ($4 per round) and the .416 Barrett ($5 per round). the .408 is about $7 a round factory made.
