This cutaway was sent to us by a reader way back in 2011 (see post here)

This week on Cool Guns of The Internet:

Today on Cool Guns of the Internet we are looking at this rare cutaway of a Colt XM rifle that is full auto. If you have a firearm you would like us to post in next weeks CGI all you have to do is send us a picture of your firearms via email, at “” and we’ll post it! But tell us what the firearm is and for more flavor, tell us a story about the gun like a funny hunting trip, or a sentimental story about the gun! Make it as detailed as possible! And let us know who you are if you want photo credit.

  • The correct designation would be XM16E1 or M16A1. It definitely isn’t an early XM16E1, as the Edgewater buffer has been replaced with the Sturdevant buffer, the bolt carrier isn’t chrome-plated, the three-prong flash hider has been replaced with a birdcage model, and the 30rd magazines were not standardized yet.

The M15 rifle was a heavy barrel M14 derivative. It was declared obsolete before it even reached production.
