DPMS G2 Recon Review

The DPMS G2 Recon .308 Rifle

If you haven’t watched our first look review of the DPMS G2 Recon, I recommend checking it out. If you are enjoying what you are watching I hope you will like and subscribe to us on YouTube.

I have always loved the .308 cartridge and fitting it in a semi-auto AR gives you a platform that honestly, is just almost perfect in most cases. The .308 is a heavier, harder-hitting round that you can use for coyotes to elk, without changing your ammo load.

When I started GearsofGuns.com, the “effective range” of the .308 was 800 meters. As the (few) years have passed, we are seeing this round being pushed to 1200 meters with ease. Now I will say, when I am unsure of a range and I know it will be over 800 yards, I do want to switch ammo.  The bare minimum of a .300 WinMag is what I prefer. However, this review isn’t about the .308. We are here to talk about the DPMS G2 Recon.

Optics

The optic I had planned to mount on this rifle was my Nikon P-308.  However, the mounts that came with the scope have to slide on the rail rather than the “hook and twist” action (see video) you see on most other mounts.

Now I will say, I am not 100% sure if this is just my rifle or all DPMS G2 uppers, but the rail on the upper is a little fatter than every other rail I have ever used. So the Nikon mounts didn’t work. This, in turn, made me contact Riton and review the Riton RT-S Mod 7 1-5x24IR scope they make. If you have seen that video, you will know that I messed up my order and picked a lower power than I had planned. I wasn’t happy with it for the DPMS. That being said, I LOVE the Riton scope and have it mounted to my IWI Tavor,  but in .308.  I want “MOAR POWER”. Before we started the final review, I switched a few optics and mounts around so that

I have my Nikon P-308 back on my .308 AR where this scope shines.
We also removed the Magpul backup iron sights off this rifle because I will never use them.

Changes

What review is complete without me changing something to make it fit me? I have made A few simple changes to this rifle.  The endplate has been changed to the Phase 5 QD plate in red so that I can connect my single point single to it. I also added three Hexmag low profile rail covers for the quad rail and a Phase 5 Ambi safety selector switch (a must for my personal rifles now).

Specs

The one thing I want to cover in the specs is that the AAC 51T and AAC 90T muzzle devices are not compatible forwards or backward with the suppressors that use the other mount. I find this important to talk about because I am sure we will have a few people googling that question. I have not found a great place that says that flat out.

AAC 762 SDN-6

This is not a review of this can but I will give you a bit of information. First off, if you are looking for this, the AAC 762 SDN-6, then I recommend checking out our friends at SilencerShop.com for all your suppressor related needs.

The can is full-auto rated which is important to me, the .308 dB rating is a 25 dB sound reduction and the .300 Blackout dB reduction is about 39-40 dB.

I am including this section in the written review so that I can tell you this about the DPMS G2 Recon. DO NOT JUST SUPPRESS IT OUT OF THE BOX! DPMS put a lightweight buffer in this build and they really should have put an “H3” buffer into this rifle so that it can function properly.

We lost about 20 rounds to gas problems before I replaced the buffer to an H3. The rifle works perfectly when unsuppressed but the cyclic rate is off when you have it suppressed and have not replaced the gas block with an adjustable gas block.

The Review

I love the rifle. I use it about once a week because it is a great rifle. I will be honest and tell you that we suppressed the rifle for the first time for this review. I thought the problems we had were due to a dirty dry gun. We have put about 1000 or so rounds through it over the last 6 months and I am still very happy with the rifle.
